Welcome the 9th member of Memphis Zoo’s giraffe herd!

The Memphis Zoo family of giraffes has just grown a bit bigger with the birth of a new baby they have decided to name Mashamba.

She is the second baby in one year to her mother, Akili.

Akili had “Bogey” prior to Mashamba, and she did not have the normal material instincts to help nurture him. However, she is now nursing Mashamba and helping nurture her.

Despite the scary looking casts, the wrappings are just there to help align her lower leg joints which is extremely common in giraffes. Mashamba is perfectly healthy!

Mashamba already stands at 6 feet tall, and she’s 115 lbs. And the best part about all of this? She’s available for viewing in her exhibit already!

The whole herd of 9 giraffes can’t wait to meet everyone at the Memphis Zoo soon.
